Many US and Canadian companies work with software teams in India. The reasons are practical, and so are the risks. Here is how to think about it.
Why companies do it
Access to a large pool of experienced engineers, flexible team sizes, and the ability to build a product without hiring a full local team are the usual reasons. Different time zones can also mean work progresses while your own team is offline.
What makes it work
Clear requirements, regular demos, a shared project board and agreed overlap hours do more than any contract clause. Start with a small first milestone so both sides learn how to work together.
What to watch for
Vague scope, no single point of contact, and no access to your own code repository are warning signs. Make sure you own the code and have access to it from day one.
