The Internet of Things (IoT) connects physical devices such as sensors, meters and machines to software so you can see what is happening and act on it. It can sound complex, but a first project can be quite simple.
Start with a question, not a gadget
Good IoT projects begin with a business question: Is this equipment running? Is the storage temperature in range? How much energy is this line using? Decide what you need to know before choosing hardware.
What a basic IoT system includes
- Devices and sensors that collect readings.
- Connectivity such as Wi-Fi, cellular or low-power networks.
- A platform that stores the data.
- A dashboard and alerts so people can act on what the data shows.
Start with a small pilot
Try one site, one machine or one process first. A pilot shows you whether the data is useful and what it takes to maintain before you roll it out wider.
Plan for security and upkeep
Connected devices need secure access, software updates and a plan for replacing batteries or hardware. Think about these early so they do not become surprises later.
