Choosing between contract and permanent hires is really a question about the work: how long it lasts, how central it is and how much it might change.
When contract staff fit well
Contract or temporary staff suit projects with an end date, seasonal peaks, cover for leave and roles where you need a specialist skill for a limited time. You can scale up quickly and scale down without a long commitment.
When permanent hires fit better
Ongoing, core roles benefit from someone who builds knowledge of your customers and systems over years and grows with the company.
Questions to ask
- Will this work still be needed in twelve months?
- Does the role hold knowledge we cannot afford to lose?
- Is the workload steady or does it swing?
- Do we need to start next week or can we wait?
A mixed approach
Many teams combine both: a permanent core and flexible staff for peaks. Some contract roles can also be converted to permanent once you know the fit is right.
